Handling Divorce Preparation On Your Own

Can you handle your divorce preparation on your own? The short answer is yes, you can. Plug in “DIY divorce” on your computer and you will find plenty of sites claiming you can handle your divorce for a small fee.

The real question is, should you? Only you can answer that for yourself but keep these things in mind.

  • Divorce tends to bring out the worst in everyone. Even the most amicable of divorces that I have ever witnessed still ended up with some level of contention, underhandedness, and just plain bad behavior. Be realistic and know that there is a good chance that the person you think your spouse is—and that you think you are, for that matter—is only a part of the whole personality. The stress and emotions can very quickly mount up, and before you know it, irrational thinking and impulsive actions have taken over the show.
  • Divorce is a time-consuming job. Likely you are working full time, looking for a job, or juggling kids and work. Trying to handle the details of your divorce on top of the stuff of everyday life may push you into feeling overwhelmed and possibly take an already long process and drag it out over an even longer period of time.
  • You are responsible for every piece of paperwork required being complete and on time. There is a lot of it, and it can get somewhat complicated. Ignorance of the law or lack of understanding of the paperwork is not a get out of jail free card with the judge. You are expected to know all of the legalities around it and understand all parts of it.
