When both parents, accompanied by their attorneys, meet with a neutral third party (mediator) to discuss issues related to child custody. The mediator’s suggestions are not binding on either parent, instead they serve as recommendations which are in the best interest of the children. Although child custody mediation is normally voluntary, in some states, parents must complete a mandatory mediation process before a judge will issue any court orders.
